Tajik Olympic hero Dilshod Nazarov was part of the Olympic Day celebrations organised by the National Olympic Committee of Tajikistan last Thursday, June 23.
Nazarov, gold medallist in the hammer throw at the 2016 Rio Olympics, was among the dignitaries who were present at the Navruzgoh Park in the capital Dushanbe in honour of Olympic Day.
Other dignitaries included the Chairman of the Committee for Youth Affairs and Sports of the Tajikistan Government, Rahmonzoda Abdullo, Deputy Chairman Parviz Sobirzoda and NOC Secretary General Muhamadsho Abdulloev.
Rahmonzoda Abdullo, who is also Vice President of Tajikistan NOC, congratulated the audience in his opening address and said: “This date, June 23, was chosen as the International Olympic Day, which aims to promote sports around the world and attract people, regardless of age, gender and opportunity to participate in sports.”
He added that Tajikistan had been taking part in the Olympic Games since 1996 and the country’s athletes had won four medals – the gold won by Nazarov, one silver medal and two bronze.
The Olympic Day celebrations featured a number of exhibition events by school children in various sports including archery, karate, gymnastics, hockey, cycling and teqball. A tug-o-war competition was also held.
